The Nan Hua Performing Arts Group held their “The Earth” Drum Theater and year-end ceremony, attended by nearly 200 students, parents, and community members. The event showcased students’ artistic achievements over the year, including performances blending percussion, music, and dance, and awarded completion and Microsoft Office certificates. Students shared experiences from international performances in Japan, Malaysia, and South Africa, highlighting growth, confidence, and cultural appreciation.
Three Acts of Goodness Youth and Children’s Camp: Nurturing Spiritual and Creative Growth

From 9 - 14 December 2024, Fo Guang Shan Nan Hua Temple held its Three Acts of Goodness Youth and Children’s Camp in South Africa, attracting 51 youths and 73 children. Focused on the Humanistic Buddhist principles of "Do Good Deeds, Speak Kind Words, Think Good Thoughts", the camp offered activities including African drumming, lantern-making, and emotional-awareness workshops, while youths developed leadership and teamwork skills. The camp concluded with games and a water fight, fostering creativity, friendship, and spiritual growth, inspiring participants to carry the “Three Good Deeds" spirit into daily life.

Fo Guang Youth and Volunteers Successfully Host Half-Day Camp at Zithobeni and Rethabiseng Kids Care Centers

On December 4–5, Venerable Jue Kai of Fo Guang Shan Nan Hua Temple, together with Nan Hua Temple's youth and volunteers, hosted two half-day camps at Zithobeni and Rethabiseng kids care center, continuing the temple’s long-standing after-school support for the children. The events combined learning and recreational activities, beginning with ice-breaking games led by local volunteers to foster teamwork and communication. Before the award ceremony, the children expressed gratitude through performances including traditional dances, songs, and recitations, showcasing their talents and appreciation for the guidance and care from volunteers and teachers. Full attendance and best improvement awards were given to encourage the children’s continued efforts. The activities concluded with the handout of cornmeal, juice, and chips, providing warmth and care from Fo Guang Shan and supporting the children’s healthy growth in a nurturing environment.

Over a hundred participants from across the region joined to learn how to face death with wisdom and compassion. During his visit, Venerable Hui Kai also delivered lectures at major universities, including the University of Pretoria and North-West University, introducing Buddhist perspectives on life and death to academic audiences for the first time. Venerable Hui Kai discussed how empathy and compassion can enrich psychological education and linked Viktor Frankl's existential therapy with Buddhist teachings on life, death, and causality, emphasizing the important of finding the meaning even in suffering.

The event featured meditation, Tai Chi, candle offerings, and chanting Avalokitesvara’s six-syllable mantra, guided by Venerable Jue Kai and the Nan Hua Temple Abbot, Venerable Hui Fang. The BLIA members across Africa joined the Global Sutra Transcription in celebration of the 58th Anniversary of Fo Guang Shan’s founding, with over 300 participants from six temples in South Africa, Lesotho, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Participants engaged in the mindful act of transcribing the Heart Sutra, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to cultivate concentration, wisdom, and inner peace. Participants shared personal reflections, transforming frustration into awareness, stillness, and insight, illustrating how transcribing sutras serves as a unifying and transformative practice, connecting African BLIA members with the global Fo Guang community in shared Dharma cultivation.

To celebrate the Buddha’s Birthday, Fo Guang Shan Nan Hua Temple hosted the Philippine “Prince Siddhartha the Musical” on May 11–12 at the Johannesburg Theatre, along with seven campus performances reaching nearly 5,000 people. Based on Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s "The Biography of Sakyamuni Buddha", the musical has toured 15 countries over the 17 years, now completing its journey across five continents.

Attended by Venerable Yung Guang, media representatives including SABC, and over 20 BLIA members, the event celebrated the culmination of a long-held aspiration to bring the musical to South Africa. The press conference emphasized the universal values of Humanistic Buddhism, the musical’s ability to convey the Buddha’s teachings, and the strong local enthusiasm, with over 2,000 tickets sold for the two performances.

BLIA Africa Fellowship Meeting Concludes Successfully: Members Reinvigorated for the Journey Ahead

The two-day 2024 BLIA Africa Fellowship Meeting concluded on March 31 at Fo Guang Shan Nan Hua Temple. The event featured lectures on faith and BLIA operations, highlighting the purpose of service and the local development. Members and youth honored Venerable Master Hsing Yun through choral performances and received symbolic Bodhi leaf bookmarks. The closing ceremony also appointed BLIA Pretoria Chapter to host the next fellowship in two year time, fostering faith, engagement, and continued propagation of Humanistic Buddhism.

The celebration featured an opening ceremony with blessings from the Nan Hua Temple Abbot, and lively dragon and lion dances accompanied by traditional drums. Visitors enjoyed diverse cultural experiences including DIY crafts, tea ceremonies, calligraphy, vegetarian cuisine, and performances ranging from Chinese martial arts to international dances. Onane Primary School Vegrun: BLIA Youths from Taiwan Promote Service in South Africa

As part of the volunteerism trip, the BLIA youth from Taiwan organized the Onane Primary School Vegrun Charity, engaging over 1,000 students from grades 4–7 in a 1.2 km run. Youth volunteers dressed as vegetables led the students around the school grounds, promoting healthy eating and physical activity. Participants received cornmeal, biscuits, and juice upon completion.

From February 2–3, a total of nine Taiwan and South African Buddhist Youth, led by Venerable Jue Kai, hosted a half-day cultural camps at Rethabiseng and Zithobeni kids care centers, engaging 200 children in games, music, and artistic activities that introduced Chinese culture. Younger students created and performed a collaborative dragon dance, while older students learned about the Lunar New Year through “Spring” and “Fortune” art activities. Outdoor games reinforced teamwork and the practice of BLIA’s “Three Acts of Goodness.” The camp concluded with the distribution of stationery gifts from Taiwan, encouraging continued learning.

From January 29 to February 2, seven Buddhist Youth from Taiwan engaged in after-school English and math tutoring at Rethabiseng and Zithobeni Kids Care Centres for over 200 children. Lessons were integrated with games, movement, and interactive activities to boost learning motivation and confidence. Youth volunteers navigated language barriers by simplifying instructions and actively encouraged students, creating an engaging, supportive environment. Through playful activities like rhythm games, children reinforced their understanding of math and English, while the volunteers gained experience in teaching, leadership, and cross-cultural communication.

Fo Guang Shan in South Africa: Distributing Laba Congee to Spread Blessings

Fo Guang Shan Nan Hua Temple and the BLIA Johannesburg Chapter held their annual Laba Congee event at Johannesburg China Mall, distributing over 3,000 portions of congee to the community to commemorate the Buddha’s enlightenment. Over 50 Fo Guang members and youth worked together to prepare, cook, and package the congee, while reciting the Heart Sutra to bless recipients. The congee, along with locally adapted corn soup, was delivered to various malls and shops across Johannesburg, spreading warmth, blessings, exemplifying the integration of Buddhist practice into local culture.

Families chanted sutras, recited Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Prayer for Newborns, and received sacred beads, wishing the children health, wisdom, and gratitude.
