A LIFELONG JOURNEY

The Background and Origins of

The year 2025 marks a significant milestone for the FGS-Nan Hua Performing Arts Group in South Africa—a moment that honors our past while stepping boldly into the future. On this special occasion, we present the African-Chinese Percussion Musical Drama " A Lifelong Journey. Echoes of The World" as our annual gift—an offering of art in heartfelt gratitude to the South African devotees and Chinese community for their years of generous support, and to all who have provided us with opportunities to perform, learn, and grow.

Since our founding in 2014 under the compassionate guidance of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the founder of Fo Guang Shan, we have used art as a vessel to carry forward beauty and kindness. Inspired by the ideal of “bringing joy through art and passing on wisdom through drumming,” we have worked to deepen cultural exchange and preserve artistic traditions between China and Africa.

This year is especially meaningful as we observe “Passing on the Light for Sixty Years, Looking Ahead to a Century”—a tribute to the centenary of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s birth and the 60th anniversary of Fo Guang Shan. We dedicate this musical as a sincere offering in his memory and as a reflection of what we have achieved in over a decade of cultural and artistic exchange.

This performance also represents FGS-Nan Hua Performing Arts Group first step onto the international stage. We welcome feedback and insight from all corners of South African society, as we continue to refine our craft in preparation for returning to Fo Guang Shan Headquarters next year. There, we look forward to sharing a more mature and polished performance with our teachers and the wider public.

It is our hope that through ever-growing artistic expression, FGS-Nan Hua Performing Arts Group may continue to contribute to the cultural life of South Africa, and that art without borders may serve as a bridge for meaningful dialogue and mutual inspiration between Chinese and African civilizations.

May the rhythm of the drum and the light of hope continue to echo across the human world—far, wide, and without end.

This percussion theater work traces the journey of Zuli, a South African girl, weaving together diverse fragments of family and societal life. Through themes of adversity, human resilience, and cultural integration, it naturally incorporates the  Humanistic Buddhist philosophy of "Four Givings" “giving confidence, joy, hope, and convenience,” subtly conveying the profound wisdom and values embedded within.
